This autumn, two planets are walking backward at the same time. Venus, the planet of love, pleasure and what we value, has been retrograde since October 3, and on October 24 Mercury, the planet of thought and communication, turns retrograde too. Both move through Scorpio, the sign of buried truth, deep feeling and transformation, and both turn direct on the very same day, November 13. When the planet of the mind and the planet of the heart review at once, the conversations we’ve avoided, the feelings we’ve tucked away and the questions about what we really want tend to rise together. A ritual for this retrograde needs to honor both sides, so this one asks you to speak your truth, name what you value and then let it all soften and release. If you’d like the full astrology behind this season, read our guide to Mercury retrograde in Scorpio. 🦂 Why This Retrograde Calls for a Different Ritual Most Mercury retrograde rituals focus on protection from tech glitches and crossed wires. This one is different, because Scorpio doesn’t do surface level. Mercury in Scorpio turns the retrograde review toward hidden motives, unspoken words and emotional matters that were never quite resolved. It’s less about the text you sent by accident and more about the one you never sent at all. Venus retrograde turns our attention inward, toward what we love, what we value and what we allow ourselves to receive. It began in Scorpio, bringing old relationship patterns and buried feelings up for review, and on October 25 it moves back into Libra, shifting the focus to balance, fairness and whether our partnerships still fit who we are. Together, they ask one big question: does what you say match what you feel and value? Both planets also cross the same stretch of the sky in early Scorpio, between 5° and 8°, which makes the overlap feel especially personal if you have planets there. That’s why this ritual works with words, the heart and water, the element of Scorpio and the element of emotion. 🗓️ When to Do This Ritual You can do this ritual any time between October 23 and November 13, but these nights carry extra power: October 23, the Venus cazimi: Venus passes directly in front of the Sun, which astrologers see as Venus’s rebirth, a moment of fresh clarity about the heart. It’s the eve of Mercury’s retrograde, perfect for opening this season with intention. November 4, the Mercury cazimi: Mercury meets the Sun halfway through its retrograde, bringing a brief window of mental clarity. November 13: Both planets turn direct, the ideal night to close the ritual. 🕯️ What You’ll Need A cleansing tool, such as the White Sage Sacred Mist or a Eucalyptus Smudge Bundle A piece of amethyst, the stone of clarity and intuition Paper and a pen, or a journal like the Mystical Musings Divination Diary A bowl of water, or your Small Cauldron filled with water A candle 🌑 The Ritual Cleanse your space.Mist or smoke-cleanse the space around you to clear old, heavy energy. Scorpio rules purification, so this marks the shift from everyday life into sacred space. Light your candle. Ground into clarity.Hold your amethyst in your hand and take three slow breaths. Ask yourself what your mind has been circling and what your heart has been quietly asking for. Write what was never said (Mercury). On a loose piece of paper, write a letter you will never send. It might be to a person, a past version of yourself or a pattern you’re ready to outgrow. Say everything you’ve held back, without editing or softening it. This is Mercury in Scorpio’s medicine: the truth, finally put into words. Name what you value (Venus). On a separate page of your journal, write three things you truly value, and one thing you’re ready to receive. Keep it honest and simple. This is Venus retrograde’s medicine: remembering what your heart actually wants, separate from what you’ve settled for. Let the water soften it (Scorpio).Place your unsent letter in the bowl of water and watch as the ink begins to blur and the words soften. You’ve spoken your truth, and now you’re letting the water carry the weight of it. Scorpio is a water sign, and this is its gift: emotion that moves through you instead of staying stuck. Return it to the earth.Once the paper has softened, pour the water onto soil or a plant, and add the paper to your compost or bury it in the garden. Rinse and dry your cauldron straight after so it stays rust-free. Keep your values close.Place the page with your values on your altar, with your amethyst resting on top, and leave it there until November 13. 🗝️ Carrying It Through the Retrograde Over the next three weeks, return to your altar with one question each week: October 24 to 30: What’s coming back up, and what is it trying to show me? October 31 to November 6: What am I finally ready to release? (Samhain and the Mercury cazimi both fall this week.) November 7 to 13: What truth am I ready to speak, now that I know what I value? If you’d like a guided prompt for every day of this retrograde, the Mercury in Retrograde Journal holds 21 days of reflection, the exact length of this retrograde. ✨ Closing the Ritual on November 13 When Mercury and Venus turn direct, read the values you wrote on the first night. Notice what has shifted, then ask yourself which conversations now feel ready to happen and which choices now feel clear. This is the moment to move forward, speaking with a clearer mind and choosing with an open heart. Final Thoughts: Let Your Heart and Mind Meet This retrograde isn’t here to make life difficult. It’s here to bring your words and your heart back into alignment. Give yourself the space to say what’s true, remember what you value and let the rest wash away, and you’ll step out of this season knowing yourself a little more deeply than before.
