How to Unwind After a Busy Day
After commuting, spending the day at work, or dealing with the high energies of a busy day at home, it can be hard to find time to relax and unwind. You may feel like your thoughts are moving a mile a minute, and you can’t even imagine falling asleep or curling up on the couch with a book. Creating time for restoration after your day is imperative for your mind, body, and soul and ensuring that you don’t experience burnout. Discover a few ways that you can gently adjust your evening routine to allow time to take care of yourself.
Unwind & Unplug
Unplugging from our devices at the end of the day is sometimes one of the hardest things to do, even if that’s tough to acknowledge. Working on a computer all day or checking social media feels like a natural part of our routine now, but it’s important to establish healthy boundaries with work and screen time. At the end of your workday, make sure that you really do shut it all down and allow yourself to spend time with yourself, friends, or family. Setting a timer on your phone can help you create a boundary (and a reminder) to turn your phone on silent and spend your evening hours enjoying your favorite hobby or spending time with loved ones. If you enjoy watching a show at night, try adjusting the brightness on your screen or wearing blue light glasses to alleviate exposure to the blue light emitted from screens.
Fuel Your Body
Dinner can sometimes be the last thing you think of after leaving work, running errands, and cleaning up your home. This is a reminder that it is important for you to create space in the evening to allow for the creation of a wholesome meal. Your body needs fuel, and you need that fuel to keep on going! Cook meals that are colorful and will provide you with the nutrients your body needs. If cooking is not your favorite, there are plenty of at-home delivery options that can send you the ingredients and easy-to-follow recipes to your door. In addition to making sure you eat at night, eating early enough will allow your body the time it needs to efficiently digest and absorb nutrients.
Create a Relaxing Space
Creating the right environment to get comfortable and relax can be a game-changer. Even if you are in a temporary space, give yourself permission to make it as cozy as you’d like. Add pillows and blankets to your bed to cuddle up with at night. Create an ambient background with gentle playlists and light from your favorite candles or string lights. A salt lamp is a great option that emits warm light while also helping to cleanse your space.
Turn Self-Care Into a Daily Practice
Self-care doesn’t have to be a once in a blue moon practice. In fact, we encourage you to practice self-care frequently! Indulge in a salt bath with essential oils or use a shower steamer to create a spa-like effect if you are eager to crawl into bed early. Fill an essential oil diffuser with your favorite oil and turn it on before you go to bed to help you relax. Cleansing your space is a great way to clear any negativity and allow yourself to really decompress after a long day. Make sure you leave a slight crack in your window while you do this to allow that energy to leave your space. Set time aside to practice an evening yoga flow or meditate to help your body loosen up and leave you with a clear mind that is ready to ease into an evening of deep rest. Journaling in the evening can help you recall any favorite memories or allow you to mentally tie up any loose ends so you can greet the morning feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day.
