Mantras to Open Your Chakras

The ancient Indian traditions of Yoga and Ayurveda support optimal health and vitality in the body so the spiritual seeker can move throughout the chakras for higher states of awareness. In both sciences, sound is used as a transformative healing tool for opening the subtle body and moving stagnant energy out.

Staying true to the wisdom of these holistic traditions, PAAVANI Ayurveda infuses all of their products with an Ayurvedic mantra. This sounds lovely, but to those of us who are unsure of what it actually means, Trudy, co-owner of PAAVANI is here to demystify what a mantra is and how it can help heal the body as well as dive into mantras ideal for each chakra.

As Tris Thorp of The Chopra Center explains, “‘mantra’ can be broken down into two parts: ‘man’, which means mind, and ‘tra’, which means transport or vehicle.”

MANTRA:
man = mind +  tra = transport or vehicle

In other words, a mantra can transport our minds into single pointed focus during meditation. As we concentrate on the sacred sound of a mantra, our bodies and minds are infused with the healing vibrational energy embedded in the sacred sound. PAAVANI’s team of Ayurvedic Herbalists chant the traditional mantra “Om Aim Hrim Klim Chamundaye Vicche Namaha” as they make each of their products by hand in their northern California apothecary. This mantra invokes the Hindu deity Durga.

Durga is a warrior goddess who wards off evil entities and protects peace, tranquility, and prosperity. The intention behind chanting the mantra is to infuse their earth-based products with the energy of Goddess Durga. Each product acts as a shield of protection and infuses the user with the confidence and beauty that Goddess Durga radiates.

If you are just beginning to work with mantras during your meditation practice, a longer mantra like the one PAAVANI chants may seem a bit overwhelming. It could be beneficial to work with a bija mantra instead. Bija literally means ‘seed’ and it is a single syllable sound that when chanted, invokes the energy of each particular chakra.

The chakra system is responsible for storing prana or life force energy within the subtle body. Chakra translates to “wheel.” You can think of the chakras as circular wheels that spin at different frequencies. The different frequencies determine an individual’s state of awareness as well as their emotional and mental tendencies.

Below is a list of the seven basic chakras and how you can use mantras to bring greater balance to each energy center.

1. Muladhara Chakra (Root Center)

The Muladhara Chakra is located at the base of the spine and it contains the quality of the earth element and kapha dosha. If you are feeling disconnected with your loved ones or having difficulty staying focused, chant the bija mantra “Lum” to increase the earth element and the pranic energy of Muladhara Chakra.

2. Svadisthana Chakra (Sexual Center)

The Svadistana Chakra is just above the pubic bone and it houses the water element and aspects of kapha dosha. If you are experiencing feelings of anger and/or resentment, chant the bija mantra “Vum” to increase the water element and your loving devotion.

3. Manipura Chakra (Solar Plexus Center)

4. Anahata Chakra (Heart Center)

5. Vishuddha Chakra (Throat Center)

The Vishuddha Chakra is at the throat center and it houses the ether element and aspects of vata dosha. If you are experiencing the inability to share your uniqueness and voice your opinion, chant the bija mantra “Hum” to increase the ether element and speak your truth.

6. Ajna Chakra (Third Eye Center)

The Ajna Chakra is located at the point between the two eyes, at the third eye center. Subtle ether is predominant here as well as vata dosha. The Ajna energy is how one sees the world. If you are feeling closed minded with the inability to understand other cultures and ways of being, chant the bija mantra “Kshum” to increase subtle ether and a greater state of awareness.

7. Sahasrara Padma Chakra (Head Center)

The Sahasrara Padma Chakra is considered the thousand-petal lotus at the crown of the head and causal ether is situated here. When there is a heightened state of awareness moving through this chakra, one experiences satchitananda, existence, knowledge, and bliss. In other words, one experiences a connection with the universe and no feeling of separation. It is beneficial for people of all constitutions: vata, pitta, and kapha, to chant the mantra “Om” to increase causal ether in the physical, mental, and emotional bodies.

If you are however, feeling depleted and fatigued, limit the amount of chanting performed to maintain your ojas or immunity.

The time-honored practice of chanting mantra can help us live optimally and with intention. To bring mantra into your life, begin by chanting a bija mantra that connects with your current state of being. Sit in meditation for 5 minutes per day every morning. This practice will bring peace and calm into the mind and will ripple out into your daily life.
